We are a full- service facility offering integrative and innovative medicine, as well as boarding and grooming. We have both on-line and in-house pharmacies, and we are fully computerized and digitized, with EMR records, full body and dental radiology, ECG, Therapeutic Laser, Ultrasound, surgical monitoring, and a lab for blood chemistries, counts, and microbiology. We have a full-time computer systems and security Tech on staff to keep everything running.

Our doctor’s work is fully leveraged by Certified Veterinary Technicians, who are in turn supported by well-trained Veterinary Assistants.
We also have a resident Vet Tech who lives in the hospital apartment, and does nighttime monitoring. In addition, we have a dedicated and superbly trained Front Desk Staff, who know they are our initial contact with our clients. Our client retention is 30 years and more.

Company History

In 1946 Dr. Leonard Schulhof purchased a 1770 farmhouse on the Boston Post Road in Westport that is reputed to have been the headquarters of General Samuel Taylor during the Revolutionary War. This farmhouse, along with a series of later additions, became the location of what has become known as the Schulhof Animal Hospital.

In 1972, Dr. Curt Christian Benyei became Dr. Schulhof’s Associate and in 1977 he became a Partner. In 1979 a new kennel addition was added which modernized and expanded our boarding and grooming facility. Finally, in 1985 Dr. Benyei purchased the practice in its entirety.

In 1998-99 the original structure was completely renovated, and the entire 9000 square foot building was brought into architectural compliance with the Westport Historic Business Preservation District codes. In 1999 the Practice became a Limited Liability Corporation and in 2004 the Pet Spa replaced the Kennel.

In 2005 we added the Cat Clinic and in 2015, Christian Harlow Benyei became a 1/3 partner.

We have continually updated the facility and practice, and in 2021-2024 we added a whole facility natural gas generator, replaced the grass exercise paddock in the Pet Spa with artificial turf, added a ramp for older pets, and converted our medical records to EMR.

We have served the changing face of Westport for over three quarters of a century, and hope to serve it for many years to come.
Pictures of the original building, and the original practice owner, Dr. “Len” Schulhof have been kindly donated by Mary, his wife, and hang in our reception area.
